"Can he play guard?" a question every Minnesota Vikings fan had to mockingly ask whenever they signed a new player. Well, Dakota Dozier can play guard and the Vikings just signed him early yesterday morning.

In 2014, Dozier was drafted in the fourth round to the New York Jets. He has spent all five seasons with the Jets, but, has only started seven out of his 37 games with the team. All his starts came at right guard, but he has experience playing other line positions. Dozier was signed on a one-year deal worth just over the minimum of $805,000.

When Dozier was at Furman University, he started in 44 out his 45 games with 43 of them being at left tackle, and one of them at left guard. Dozier also has some experience at the fullback position; he jumped in for the final four games of last season. In a game against the Buffalo Bills, Dozier actually made two key blocks as the fullback to help Elijah McGuire run in a one-yard touchdown.

What This Means

Dozier is the second new offensive lineman that the Vikings have signed in the past two weeks with Josh Kline being the other. This signing looks to be solely used for depth at the position and to offer competition during the off-season. The Vikings, who were very low on offensive lineman before free agency now have added depth to their roster with the draft three weeks out.

The Vikings will still be looking at offensive lineman in the draft, but with recent news about TE Noah Fant, they might be waiting until the second round to strike. These recent signings make it more possible for the Vikings to go for another position or even trade down a little and gain more picks.

The Vikings cap space is also an issue going into the draft which makes it seem like a trade is in the works. It should be an interesting three weeks before the draft to see how the Vikings get back up to about $3 million in cap space to sign their new rookies.

Look for more mock drafts in the coming weeks before the NFL Draft kicks off on April 25 from Vikingnations staff.
